As the hotel anchors its place in the cultural fabric of Melbourne, supporting MIFF was a coming together of like minds to herald the new, celebrate what’s next and support one of the city’s world class events.
What is the Melbourne International Film Festival?
The Melbourne International Film Festival has been running continuously since 1952. It’s the leading film festival in Australia and sits alongside Cannes and Berlin as one of the world’s oldest film festivals. It is a truly iconic event, providing transformative experiences for audiences and filmmakers alike through a curated global program of innovative screen experiences and the world’s largest showcase of exceptional Australian filmmaking.
This year’s MIFF runs from August 5 and August 22. It’s brilliant line-up of Australian films and talent lies at its heart, alongside much anticipated titles from the Berlin, Venice and Sundance Film Festivals. It’s world class viewing, offered right here on our doorstep.
Best films from the 2021 MIFF Program
This year’s Festival is toplined this year with MIFF‘s first ever opening night film from a female indigenous director Leah Purcell, with The Drover’s Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson.
“A vivid reckoning with Australia’s outback colonial history, the revisionist outback western speaks to the realities, both past and present, of racial injustice, as tod through the lends of an Indigenous woman.” Melbourne International Film Festival
Other highlights include Nitram, the first Australian feature to premiere in competition at Cannes Film Festival in a decade, along with the touching Palazzo di Cozzo, about furniture mogul and charismatic local legend Franco Cozzo. In the International stakes, we’re looking forward to Pig, staring Nicholas Cage and a stolen truffle pig.

Pre and Post Show Dining at La Madonna
Why not time your viewing with a pre-show Aperitivo or post-film supper at La Madonna Restaurant and Bar, the luxe dining and drinking enclave at Next Hotel Melbourne that has taken its place within the dynamic food and wine fabric of Melbourne City.
At La Madonna, formality makes way for cool comfort, likened more to quintessential Melbourne Wine Bar in offer and price, with guests as comfortable propping solo at the bar as they are at a long table with a few. With food that sashays comfortably between snacks to pasta to long-haul, partnered with a creatively curated wine list, and some intriguingly discoverable in-house barrel ageing – La Madonna provides the perfect outpost for post-film discussion.
Dissect plot lines, artistic treatments and actors performances over cocktails in a quiet corner, sink into a booth for intimate conversation or feast over a menu of the Chef’s selection with fellow cinephiles.
Stay the night
Afterwards, retire relaxed and fully sated to one of our guest rooms and suites, perhaps enjoy a digestif from the selection of the house-aged cocktails in-room min bar, and contemplate what’s next in your exploration of the MIFF program and beyond.
Delve deeper with MIFF Talks
You could also include in your stay, a ticket to a MIFF Talks event, where you can hear discussion from film directors, documentarians and academics explore the themes, ideas and talent of the 2021 program, such as the conversation with Jason Di Rosso, host of ABC Radio National’s The Screen Show, as he speaks to three directors whose intimate films are featured in this year’s festival.

Digital MIFF Screenings from home
True to the pandemic times we are in, this year’s MIFF offers a hybrid program of both cinema and digital events. MIFF streaming will now be available on MIFF Play for the full duration of the festival, with a huge selection of scintillating titles available on-demand as well until 22 August.
This builds on the success of last year’s 2020 online-only festival, which reached the largest audience in the festival’s history.
La Madonna Cocktails at Home
We recommend taking some of our barrel aged cocktails home with you to continue your MIFF with Next Hotel Melbourne experience – a Negroni perhaps? We have a small selection for you to choose from, just chat with the team at La Madonna Bar to see what’s currently being poured,
