The Next Guide to the 2022 Melbourne Art Fair

As the first major event of the 2022 cultural calendar, the Melbourne Art Fair is an occasion not to be missed by art lovers and aesthetes. And Next Hotel Melbourne provides the perfect base for exploration…

Melbourne once again plays host to Australasia’s most progressive forum for contemporary art and ideas after a two-year hiatus. And as is typical of the city that takes events and festivals very seriously, this year’s Melbourne Art Fair is a world class line-up that includes an integrated program of pop up, late night and other roaming performances throughout the city including on location here at Next Hotel – the official hotel partner.

Art is too important not to share…. Romero Britto.

    Melbourne Art Fair 17 – 20 Feb ‘22

Back bigger than ever, the prestigious Melbourne Art Fair is instrumental in shaping the future of art in the region. The theme is Djeembana/Place – djeembana is a Boonwurrung word meaning a gathering place for the community to share stories, knowledge and rituals.

On display at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre will be an exhilarating curation of new and iconic work from both emerging and significant artists from all over Australasia to view and purchase over four days: more than 60 galleries are represented, with over 7000 square metres to explore.

This year’s Fair also includes installations, events, roaming performances, and pop-up video projections scattered through the CBD – and Next Hotel Melbourne is included in the city’s artful immersion.

Nick Modrzewski at Next Hotel Melbourne for Gallery Night Live

Performance art will be checking in to Next Hotel Melbourne, with artist Nick Modrzewski presenting ‘Furlough’ in the surrounds of the Hotel Lobby as part of the Fair’s roaming CBD program. This colourful spectacle for hotel guests and local visitor alike to enjoy will feature disguised city workers in a bizarre twist of the everyday mundane.

Taking place as lockdown restrictions lift and Melbournians begin to return from leaves of absence, or ‘furloughs’, Modrzewski’s work celebrates the transition of workers back into city-life and the once familiar experience of “the commute”. More here. After the free performance, meander up the golden lit staircase to reflect over an artfully  aged cocktail at La Madonna Restaurant & Bar. Find a spot in the sumptuous lounge taking in the city streets below, perfect for gazing on as you plan your next creative adventure.  6:30pm – 7:00pm, Wednesday, 16 February

In Room Digital Artworks – Melbourne Art Fair Channel

In a celebration of what’s new, Next Hotel Melbourne will be launching an exclusive Melbourne Art Fair in-room channel during the Fair, featuring digital works curated especially by DROPLT– a future focused digital art and NFT platform built to bridge the gap between the crypto and traditional art worlds.

    Artists featured include:

    • Oscar Haggstrom, whose  work includes VR, Film, Animation and Printmaking installations, with the common theme of depicting everyday situations by using childlike cartoon imagery
    • Carla Gannis, a Brooklyn based artist, who produces works that consider the uncanny complications between grounded and virtual reality, nature and artifice, science and science fiction in contemporary culture.
